Express yo’ love for crepes

Powdered sugar coats my tongue with an absolutely sublime feeling. Just seconds later, my senses have been tantalized to the highest degree. I feel as though I’ve just taken a bite into the crisp spring season.

Crepe Express on Haight Ashbury is my new found heaven. A simplistic little cafe with a few seats and stools here and there, Crepe Express is the perfect stop for the lazy morning customer. Oftentimes, customers seem to never leave the store, sitting and reading their magazine, newspaper, or hippie-novel for hours after they have finished their snack.

On one occasion, I had my usual, the simple crepe with nutella and ended up with some sort of an apple cinnamon crepe. Deciding to go with the laid-back atmosphere of Haight Ashbury, I just rolled with it, and kept my disappointment to myself. Surprisingly enough, I fell in love with this crepe. The combination of warm slices of apple and cold whipped cream melted in my mouth- I savored each and every bite. I also stole a few bites of my companion’s thick and heavy strawberry nutella crepe, which was just as decadent.

The service at Crepe Express varies from day to day; I have been annoyed beyond means a handful of times- the workers behind the counter seemed to be taking their sweet, sweet time doing something else while I waited impatiently for my crepe ‘express.’ I never knew whether or not the so-called servers would bring me my order or not. It was always a 50/50 kind of gamble on whether or not I would pick up my own order.I’ve been rudely ignored a few times, and have been irritated at their lack of customer appreciation. When I finally complained to a waitress about the slow service, she only rolled her eyes and laughed. Offended? Yes I was.

However, I’d much rather focus on the crepes rather than the service. The crepes here felt fresh, crisp, and strangely enough, real – if that’s the word to call it. These crepes are definitely not delicate, the feta cheese, spinach, and tomato crepe in particular, was enormous. Unfortunately, on one unfortunate visit to this place, I came across a chocolate and banana crepe that was a bit too rubbery in it’s consistency for my taste.

There are so many flaws within this establishment the service, mainly that one would think that I despised this place. And yet the fluffy, warm crepes draw me in like a child after tasting soda for the first time. It’s okay, Crepe Express, I forgive you.
