Macy's Passport fashion show stuns audience
45 students from Abraham Lincoln High School attended the 24th annual Macy’s Passport Teen Night on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006 held at Herbst & Festival Pavilions in the Fort Mason Center.
The Macy’s Passport fashion show is held to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS issues. Every year the show gives money to various programs that help thousands of people living with HIV. In the past 24 years the fashion shows raised over $24 million.
“The fashion show was initially created to help spread the knowledge of HIV/AIDS. We integrate entertainment into the show in order to interest more people,” the coordinator of Macy’s Passport said.
The fashion show is held for five days: three in San Francisco and two in Los Angeles. There is one teen night in both San Francisco and Los Angeles where high-school kids watch the fashion show, play games and win prizes.
In order to attend the fashion show, students were required to create projects that showed an understanding of HIV/AIDS awareness. This year is the first year that projects were required.
“The top three projects from each school are submitted to Macy’s for an ever larger contest. The first place winner will receive a $500 gift card for Macy’s and a T-shirt signed by Nelly,” Wellness Center coordinator Jen Kenny-Baum said.
Juniors Crystal Cheng and Yvonne Lau and senior Annie Kuang were the three top place winners for Lincoln this year. Cheng created a T-shirt, Lau made a documentary of two people living with AIDS, and Kuang sewed a vest. The winners of the district-wide contest will be announced on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, 2006.
